We’re delighted to share that Burwood has been named the 16th coolest neighbourhood in the world for 2025, according to Time Out Sydney. This announcement shines a spotlight on the vibrant character of the suburb and the people, culture, and creativity that make it such a unique part of Sydney’s Inner West.
At the heart of this recognition is Burwood Chinatown, a project we were fortunate to design. Our vision for the precinct was to create a destination where food, culture, and community could come together in one shared space. Inspired by the bustling hawker markets of Asia, Burwood Chinatown was designed to capture the energy of authentic street food experiences, with each stall offering its own unique flavours and stories. From handmade noodles and skewers to bubble tea and dumplings, the precinct has become a place where visitors can experience a true taste of Asia, right here in Sydney.
One of the features that has defined Burwood Chinatown is its lively atmosphere. The neon lights that line the precinct give it a distinct personality, transforming the laneways into a glowing hub that comes alive at night. Combined with its buzzing food culture, this has helped Burwood Chinatown become more than just a dining destination—it’s a space that brings people together and adds a sense of vibrancy to the suburb.
In 2024, Burwood Chinatown was also recognised as one of Sydney’s new Special Entertainment Precincts. This designation acknowledges the role it plays in shaping the city’s cultural and nightlife landscape, providing a safe and thriving environment for late-night dining and entertainment.
For us, the most rewarding part of this journey has been seeing how the community has embraced Burwood Chinatown. It has grown into a place where families gather, friends meet, and visitors from across Sydney and beyond come to explore and celebrate culture through food.
We are humbled to see Burwood Chinatown recognised as both a much-loved local favourite and an emerging international landmark. This acknowledgement from Time Out Sydney is not only a reflection of the design, but of the vendors, operators, and community who bring the precinct to life every day.
