We’re humbled to share that Burwood Chinatown has been awarded Best Retail Development at the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards – Australia 2024.
The PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards is the region’s biggest and most respected real estate awards programme, celebrating excellence across architecture, development, and community impact. These awards recognise projects that raise the bar in placemaking across Asia-Pacific. For Burwood Chinatown to be acknowledged on this platform is a real honour—and a reflection of the community that helped shape it.
As the design team behind Burwood Chinatown, we’re proud to have contributed to a project that has resonated so strongly with its local community. From the outset, our aim was to create a precinct that felt warm, welcoming, and full of life—a place where people could gather and connect through the shared experience of food.
We took inspiration from the hawker markets of Asia—those lively, open-air food hubs where a sense of energy, culture, and connection is always in the air. From handmade noodles to bubble tea, every vendor at Burwood Chinatown brings their own unique flavour and story. The design approach focused on celebrating this diversity—giving each stall its own character while weaving them together through a cohesive, street-style laneway environment. Neon signage, layered textures, and a sense of discovery all help bring the precinct to life.
But beyond the food and form, what has made Burwood Chinatown truly special is the way it’s been embraced by the local community. It’s become a place for families, friends, and visitors to come together—whether it’s for a quick lunch, a night out, or one of the many cultural events hosted in the space.
We’ve been fortunate to see Burwood Chinatown grow into a place that means a lot to many people. It’s become a backdrop for everyday meals, festive celebrations, and new cultural experiences in Sydney’s Inner West.
This award is a reflection of the collective effort behind the precinct. From the passionate food vendors to the operators, community partners, and everyday visitors who’ve embraced the space—it’s been a shared journey from the beginning.
