The Wood Dragon installation, crafted from timber panels, graces Dixon Street’s skyline with a vibrant red-hued dragon soaring amid dual-toned gold clouds, bestowing good fortune upon businesses in Chinatown. The dragon, a symbol of magnanimity, might, and magnificence, is crafted on a grand scale using abundant timber resources. Reflecting the persona of a powerful and vital entity, solid materials are employed in the dragon’s construction. As a veritable storehouse of energy, the dragon embodies impetuosity and eagerness, manifested in the neon overlay that imparts an unquenchable, blazing fire-like characteristic. Inspired by Chen Rong’s Nine Dragon handscroll from 1244, the installation pays homage to the ancient Chinese masterpiece, depicting dynamic forces of nature in Daoism through dragons navigating clouds, mists, whirlpools, rocky mountains, and fire.
